Sasquatch Watch: She & Him

May 21, 2010

I should maybe put this out there first, I may be a bit biased towards She & Him because I have a huge crush on Zooey Deschanel. I mean she’s beautiful, talented, and both sweet and sassy at the same time. But I suppose I should write about the band. Well the “Him” part also happens to be the hugely talented M. Ward. He is one of the foursome in one of my favorites Monsters of Folk, as well as the singer/writer/producer of many other albums. And let’s not forget that Zooey Deschanel playing her part as the “She”. A multi talented beautiful actress in such films as “500 Days of Summer”, “Elf”, and “Almost Famous”. The combination of their vocal stylings, and the old timey pop feel is what separates this duo from the others. I don’t think their music is for everyone. A lot of music is propelling forward with auto-tuning, electronically manufactured beats, and distorted guitar repetitions it’s pretty rare you’ll ever find any artists fall back to a simpler time of vocal doo-whop choruses and classic song structure. But with Zooey’s unpolished natural vocals, and M. Ward’s skillful producing the resulting work is astounding, and definitely worth a listen.

They have two self-titled albums labeled ‘Volume One’ and ‘Volume Two’ (released earlier this year). Both are solid albums, and worth checking out. Some of my favorites include: “Sentimental Heart”, “Gonna Get Along Without You Now”, “Me and You”, “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here”, “This is Not A Test”, and “Thieves”. Again, it’s music from another era, and I don’t think it’s for everyone. But if you’re looking for something a little throw-back to a more innocent and sweeter era look no further than She & Him. Good music.
